Preliminary Review of the Draft Science, Education, and Design Strategy for the Water and Environmental Research Systems (WATERS)

Environmental Research System (WATERS) Network, National Research Council - Personal Name;

One of the most critical issues facing the United States today is the proper management of our water resources. Water availability and quality are changing due to increasing population, urbanization, and land use and climate change. Despite the fact that overall water use in the U.S. has remained relatively constant since about 1980, shortages in water supply have been increasing in frequency in many parts of the country, in part because of population increases in coastal and arid to semi-arid areas (Hutson et al., 2005). Water quality is declining in some areas due to the introduction of nutrients, toxics, pathogens, pharmaceuticals, and a variety of household products (see http://iaspub.epa.gov/waters10/attains_nation_cy.control; http://water. usgs.gov/nawqa/). As a society, we must learn to manage our valuable water resources more effectively to meet current and future demands for water.
