Surgical Technique of the Abdominal Organ Procurement

There are many ways to perform abdominal organ procurement (1–19). In this book,
I describe the abdominal multiorgan procurement operation, which is performed on
a hemodynamically stable, brain death donor. Brain death is defined as a complete,
irreversible, and permanent cessation of electric activity of the brain, including the
brain stem. The donor is defined as a heart-beating donor (HBD) (6).
Most organ donation for organ transplatation is done in the setting of a brain
death, heart-beating donor (HBD).
The donor selection criteria are different for each organ and sometimes there are
differences between the transplant centers. According to the literature (15–22 ),
there are no more traditional limits concerning donor selection.
Generally, donor criteria in abdominal organ transplantation are as follows:
