Modern Statistics

Rand Wilcox - Personal Name;

There are two general goals in this book. Assuming the reader has had no prior training in statistics, the first is to provide a graduate-level introduction to basic, routinely used statistical techniques relevant to the social and behavioral sciences. As can be seen from the Table of Contents, a wide range of topics is covered. Included is a nontechnical description of three major insights regarding when routinely used methods perform well and when they are highly unsatisfactory. One of these insights has to do with situations where data are sampled from what is called a heavy-tailed distribution. Such distributions are routinely encountered. During the last half century, hundreds of published papers describe practical concerns and how they might be addressed. The second general insight has to with the effects of skewness. A deeper understanding of how to deal with skewed distributions, and why skewed distributions can wreak havoc on any inferential method based in part on a least squares estimator, has been developed. The third insight has to do with heteroscedasticity. In practical terms, routinely taught and used methods can result in relatively low power and highly misleading results, contrary to what was once believed. Explanations are provided about why it was once thought that classic methods are robust to violations of assumptions and why it is now known that under general conditions, this is not the case.
