POLITICS IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD

Peter Burnell, Vicky Randall & Lise Rakner - Personal Name;

The aim of this book is to explore the chang- ing nature of politics in the developing world in the twenty-first century. Both ‘politics’ and the ‘developing world’ are concepts that require fur- ther elaboration and which are discussed more fully below. By politics, we mean broadly activities associated with the process and institutions of gov- ernment, or the state, but in the context of wider power relations and struggles. By the developing world, we are primarily referring to those regions that were formerly colonized by Western powers, have been late to industrialize, and sustain relatively high levels of poverty: Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America, including the Caribbean.
In our analysis of politics in the developing world, the complex and changing nexus between state and society has centre stage. This is because it is the reciprocal interaction of state and society and the influence that each one exerts on the other that most accounts for the distinctive character of de- veloping countries’ politics. Needless to say that influence varies in both degree and kind, over time, as between individual states and inside states. The book does not set out to present a case for saying the state is now marginal for the politi- cal analysis of developing countries
